Product Description
The Optical Turnstile with Clear Bi-Parting Barriers is a premium pedestrian access-control system designed for corporate lobbies, commercial buildings, government facilities, universities, visitor entrances and other locations where security and architectural appearance are equally important. Its slim cabinet profile and clear moving barriers create a clean, open entrance while providing controlled pedestrian passage.
The system uses two motorized clear barriers that separate to open the passageway. Operation is bi-directional, allowing controlled entry and exit, while optical sensors monitor movement through the lane. The system can detect unauthorized passage, determine direction of travel and identify tailgating or closely following users.
An authorized credential can trigger a single passage, after which the barriers return to the closed position. When another authorized credential is presented, the system can buffer or “stack” credentials so the barriers remain open for the next authorized user, supporting higher pedestrian throughput. Multiple operating modes are available, including controlled passage, free passage, direction-closed and visitor modes.
Passage and Barrier Options
The system is available with 28-inch (711 mm) standard passageways or 36-inch (914 mm) wider passageways for accessibility and other special-use requirements. Barrier heights are available in approximately 35 inches, 46 inches or 69 inches, allowing the configuration to be matched to the desired balance of visibility, aesthetics and access-control requirements.
The narrow end cabinets have a nominal width of approximately 3.8 inches (96.5 mm), with a maximum cabinet width of approximately 5.3 inches (135 mm). Center expansion cabinets use the same basic dimensions and allow additional lanes to be created without introducing oversized center columns.
Access Control and Security
The optical turnstile integrates with third-party access-control systems through dry-contact inputs and outputs, with TCP/IP integration also available. Compatible systems can provide authorized/denied passage signals, direction control, visitor access, emergency override and other operating commands. Outputs can report events such as authorized passage, unauthorized passage, unauthorized presence, blocked sensors and barrier conditions.
The optical sensing system monitors the complete passage area and can track a person's movement through the lane. Sensors are positioned at multiple heights to help identify low-profile attempts such as crawling, while dedicated safety sensors help prevent the barriers from moving when a person or object is within the barrier travel area.
Status indication can be provided through illuminated user graphics and red/green status lighting. Optional dynamic side-panel illumination can also provide visual indication of normal, authorized, closed and alarm conditions.
Emergency and Power-Failure Operation
The system includes dedicated life-safety inputs for emergency operation. When the fire/life-safety input is activated, the barriers can open in the exit direction and remain open until the system is reset. During a power failure, the barriers can be moved freely in either direction; an optional power buffer can automatically open the barriers in the exit direction when power is lost.
Architectural Installation and Floor Preparation
Installation should be coordinated with the architectural, electrical and access-control drawings before the finished floor is completed. The manufacturer's specification calls for installation on a level, firm concrete floor, with a minimum slab platform of approximately 4 inches (102 mm) of concrete.
The installation can use direct anchoring to the concrete floor or an optional baseplate/floor-saver configuration. The baseplate option can simplify installations where drilling and trenching through the finished floor is undesirable and provides a finished mounting platform between the turnstile and floor.
Electrical and Data Stub-Ups
Before concrete or finished flooring is completed, coordinate conduit stub-ups for:
Primary Power: approximately 3/4-inch (19 mm) conduit to each main controller cabinet.
Low-Voltage / Inter-Cabinet Communication: approximately 1-1/2-inch (38 mm) conduit between cabinet sets.
Access-Control / Reader Wiring: approximately 3/4-inch (19 mm) conduit for reader and access-control cabling.
Ethernet / TCP/IP: Ethernet cabling to each main controller cabinet where network configuration or monitoring is used. The manufacturer specifically states that Ethernet should not be run in the same conduit as AC power.
The manufacturer also specifies that primary power should be installed before the turnstile installation and that power and communications wiring should enter through the designated floor stub-up locations.
Drilling, trenching, concrete-floor preparation, baseplate selection and conduit coordination should be decided before the floor is finished.
Construction and Materials
The cabinet exterior is constructed from #304 stainless steel with a #4 satin finish, while the clear side panels and moving barriers use cast acrylic with an abrasion-resistant coating. The moving barriers are available in 0.5-inch (13 mm)or 0.75-inch (19 mm) thickness depending on the selected barrier height.
The system can also be customized with alternate cabinet finishes, lid materials and colors, panel illumination and etched graphics or logos.
Multi-Lane Configurations
Multiple lanes can be created by combining end cabinets with center expansion cabinets. The center cabinet arrangement allows additional lanes to be added without requiring a separate full-width end cabinet between every lane. Mixed-width configurations are also possible, including installations that combine standard and wide passage lanes.
This makes the system particularly useful for main lobby entrances where architects may need a combination of standard pedestrian lanes and a wider accessible or equipment passage.
Baseplate Option
Also available with baseplate (wires are fitting within) so there is no need for core-drilling or trenching through concrete or tiles.
