A Guide to Access Control Pedestals & Vehicle Terminals
This dual-height access-control pedestal provides a durable mounting platform for access-control equipment serving passenger cars, SUVs, delivery vans and other smaller commercial vehicles. Two equipment heads are positioned at approximately 42 inches and 64 inches, allowing drivers of different vehicle heights to conveniently operate or communicate with access-control equipment from their vehicles.
The dual-channel design provides separate internal wiring paths to the upper and lower equipment heads. This makes the pedestal suitable for installations requiring multiple access-control devices, such as card readers, RFID readers, intercoms, keypads, cameras, entry/exit buttons and other security equipment.
Dual-Height Configuration
The approximately 42-inch lower equipment position is suited to passenger cars, while the 64-inch upper position provides a more convenient operating height for SUVs and other taller vehicles.
The pedestal provides a 12-inch reach, positioning the equipment toward the vehicle lane. This allows drivers to reach or communicate with the equipment without having to lean excessively out of the vehicle or fold in the vehicle's side mirrors.
Dual-Channel Wiring
The pedestal incorporates a 2 × 4-inch wiring channel at the bottom that divides approximately 24 inches above the base into two separate channels leading to the upper and lower equipment heads. This provides protected and organized pathways for power, communications and access-control wiring.
This configuration is particularly useful when different access-control devices are installed at the two vehicle heights and each requires its own wiring path.
Steel Construction and Finish
The pedestal is constructed from carbon steel tubing with a 0.120-inch wall thickness. The manufacturer specifies a tight, uniform 6-inch bend radius and describes the construction as using substantially more steel than competing models.
The exterior receives a polyester powder-coat finish with UV protection for outdoor exposure. The standard finish is black wrinkle. The manufacturer states that the pedestal is engineered to withstand sustained Category 5 hurricane-force winds.
Equipment Mounting
The pedestal uses a face plate with universal mounting holes, allowing a range of access-control equipment to be installed without being limited to a particular equipment manufacturer.

Baseplate and Installation
This is a pad-mounted/floor-mounted pedestal, rather than an in-ground or wet-cement installation. The heavy-duty base plate can be positioned on or off a concrete curb or traffic island. A sliding cover plate conceals the mounting bolts after installation.
Two styles of mounting-bolt kits are available separately. For an existing concrete surface, the installation can be laid out, drilled and anchored using the appropriate mounting hardware for the substrate.
For new construction, the concrete pad or traffic island, reinforcement, conduit and underground wiring should be coordinated before concrete work begins.
Trenching and Conduit
Where electrical, communications or access-control wiring must be brought to the pedestal, trenching and conduit pathways should be coordinated with the pedestal location before site work begins.
The internal dual-channel design provides protected wiring paths within the pedestal after the underground conduit reaches the base. The trench depth, conduit size and electrical requirements should be established by the project's electrical and access-control plans rather than treated as universal pedestal dimensions.
Replacement and Service
Because the pedestal is pad mounted rather than embedded in concrete, the mounting bolts can be accessed beneath the sliding cover plate. This makes replacement of a damaged pedestal easier than replacing an in-ground or wet-cement-mounted unit.
Customization
Custom options include height, reach, face plates, base plates and powder-coat colors. Alternate standard colors and custom RAL colors are available, allowing the pedestal to be coordinated with project requirements. Custom configurations may affect cost and lead time.
