Revolving Turnstile – Secure, Metal Detector

This motorized high-security revolving turnstile with built-in metal detection combines pedestrian access control, single-person passage verification and physical security within one automated entrance. The three-wing revolving configuration allows controlled pedestrian movement while monitoring each entry sector for unauthorized passage and metal-detection alarms.

A distinctive feature is the use of concealed automatic security doors on the protected side. If an entering user fails a required security check, the appropriate door closes to prevent access to the secured area while the revolving turnstile can continue moving. The rejected user is directed back toward the unsecured side rather than requiring the entire revolving entrance to stop.

This configuration is designed for data centers, government facilities, corporate headquarters, airports, financial institutions, museums, secured campuses and other restricted-access facilities requiring a higher level of pedestrian screening.

Built-In Metal Detection

An integrated walk-through metal detector screens users entering the secured area. If the metal detector generates an alarm, the security door for that sector remains closed, preventing the user from entering the protected side.

The revolving mechanism continues to return the rejected user to the entrance side, where the person can exit the turnstile. This arrangement allows other authorized users occupying separate sectors to continue through the entrance rather than stopping the entire system because of one alarm.

Metal detection is primarily used for incoming pedestrian screening and can operate in combination with credential-based access control.

Single-Person Passage Detection

Integrated sensors monitor the revolving sectors to verify one-person passage. Volumetric presence detection supports both anti-tailgating and anti-piggybacking protection, helping prevent a second person from entering within the same authorized sector.

If more than one person is detected in the entry sector, access to the secured side can be denied and the occupants returned to the unsecured side. This provides an additional security layer beyond credential verification alone.

Controlled Security Doors

Automatic security doors are positioned on the protected side of the revolving entrance. During normal authorized passage, the appropriate door opens to permit the user to enter the secured area.

When the system detects an unauthorized credential, metal-detection alarm or invalid passage condition, the corresponding door remains closed and prevents entry. Intercom communication, voice messages and traffic-light indicators can provide instructions and passage-status information to the user.

Configurations are available with either one or two protected-side security doors, depending on the selected entrance arrangement.

Access Control Integration

The revolving turnstile can integrate with badge, proximity, RFID/NFC, fingerprint and other biometric access-control systems. Credential readers can be mounted outside the entrance or incorporated into the system depending on the project configuration.

Published system interfaces include RS232, RS485 and IBIS, allowing integration with third-party access-control equipment. The system can coordinate credential authorization with metal detection and single-person verification before allowing passage into the secured area.

Security Glazing and Construction

The entrance uses a removable steel structure designed for assembly directly at the installation location. Security glazing provides both ballistic and burglary resistance.

Standard documented glazing includes:

• Turnstile glazing: BR1/S ballistic resistance and P4B burglary resistance
• Structure glazing: BR2/S ballistic resistance and P6B burglary resistance
• Optional structure glazing: BR4/S

Reinforced configurations are also available with FB4 ballistic-resistant steel panels.

Three-Wing Revolving Configuration

The standard configuration uses a three-wing revolving turnstile with an overall diameter of approximately 70.9" (1800 mm) and overall height of approximately 93.5" (2375 mm).

The clear pedestrian passage is approximately 29.5" (750 mm) wide × 82.3" (2090 mm) high. A four-wing revolving configuration is also available as an option.

Emergency Operation

An automatic emergency unlocking system allows the entrance to be released when required. A mechanical lock can provide additional after-hours security, and an optional armored protector is available for additional key-cylinder protection.

The electric drive also provides reverse free rotation following a power failure, while backup battery capability is included in the current Security Entrances configuration.

Indoor / Outdoor

The revolving security turnstile can be used for indoor installations or protected exterior-to-interior building entrances. For applications exposed to exterior conditions, an optional UV-resistant rain cover can provide additional overhead weather protection. A reinforced upper cover is also available.

Exterior installations should be coordinated with the architectural opening, drainage, weather exposure, electrical requirements and surrounding building envelope.

Finish and Color Options

The steel structure can be specified with powder-coated RAL colors or a stainless-steel finish, allowing the entrance to coordinate with surrounding architectural finishes.

Finish selection should be coordinated with the installation environment and surrounding doors, storefront, glazing and architectural metalwork.

Floorless Installation

The floorless design eliminates a raised portal floor or base platform. The removable structure is assembled and installed directly on the building's existing structural floor.

Installation requires coordination of the approximately 70.9" diameter footprint, structural anchoring, electrical service, access-control connections and surrounding pedestrian clearances. Where concealed wiring is required, new construction can incorporate embedded conduit, while existing installations may require trenching, core drilling or another approved wiring method.

Final anchor locations, conduit routing and electrical connections should be coordinated with approved project shop drawings before drilling or floor preparation.
