A Guide to Access Control Pedestals & Vehicle Terminals

This 12 × 12 outdoor access-control reader cover provides a durable protective hood for card readers, keypads, intercoms, entry and exit buttons, and other access-control equipment installed at exposed exterior locations. The larger square configuration provides additional coverage for equipment that requires more mounting area than smaller reader covers.

The hood is designed for pedestrian and vehicle access points, including parking facilities, gated entrances, commercial properties, residential communities, building entrances and other controlled-access locations. Its universal, non-proprietary design allows it to accommodate a variety of access-control devices.

Equipment Protection

The hood incorporates a 3.5-inch top overhang to help shield equipment from rain, snow and direct sun exposure. Access-control equipment is positioned beneath the overhang while remaining accessible to users.

The 12 × 12 size provides a larger protective area for equipment such as card and proximity readers, keypads, intercoms, push buttons and other access-control devices.

Construction and Finish

The hood is fabricated from 16-gauge carbon steel and finished with an exterior polyester powder coat with UV inhibitor. The standard finish is black wrinkle powder coat, providing a durable exterior finish for access-control installations.

Installation

The cover is designed for surface mounting, with knockout holes provided for field drilling and mounting to the supporting structure. The installation drawing identifies 0.30-inch knockout holes and provides the mounting-hole pattern and dimensional information required for installation.

The cover can be mounted to a concrete wall, masonry surface, steel structure, access-control pedestal, terminal or other suitable structural support. Anchors and fasteners should be selected according to the actual substrate and site conditions.

For new installations, trenching and conduit pathways for power, communications and access-control wiring should be coordinated with the reader location before concrete or other site work is completed. Trenching and underground conduit are part of the overall access-control installation and are not integral to the hood itself.

When the hood is incorporated into a freestanding pedestal or terminal, the baseplate, anchors and foundation requirements are determined by the supporting structure. This allows the hood to be used with both new pedestal installations and existing structural supports.

Mounting and Custom Options

The standard 12 × 12 cover is supplied in black wrinkle powder coat. Custom options include alternate powder-coat colors and modified height, width or depth when a project requires a different enclosure configuration. Custom dimensions may involve additional cost and lead time.

The installation drawing provides the specific mounting-hole and knockout arrangement for the 12 × 12 configuration. The drawing shows an overall nominal dimension of approximately 12.02 inches and identifies the 0.30-inch knockout holes.
