A Guide to Access Control Pedestals & Vehicle Terminals

This 8 × 10 outdoor access-control reader cover provides a durable protective hood for card readers, keypads, intercoms, entry and exit buttons, and other access-control equipment installed in exposed locations. The larger portrait configuration provides additional vertical coverage for equipment that requires more space than a compact reader cover.

The protective hood is designed for pedestrian and vehicle access points, including parking facilities, gated entrances, commercial properties, residential communities and other exterior access-control applications. Its non-proprietary design allows it to be used with access-control equipment from different manufacturers.

Equipment Protection

A 3.5-inch top overhang helps shield equipment from rain, snow and direct sun exposure. The hood provides overhead protection while leaving the front of the installed device accessible for normal operation by users.

The 8 × 10 size is suitable for equipment requiring a taller protective enclosure, including card and proximity readers, keypads, intercoms, push buttons and other access-control devices.

Construction and Finish

The hood is fabricated from 16-gauge carbon steel for a durable exterior installation. It is finished with an outdoor polyester powder coat with UV inhibitor for protection against outdoor exposure. The standard finish is black wrinkle.

Installation

The cover is designed for surface mounting. Knockout holes are provided in the enclosure to allow the installer to drill the required mounting holes based on the supporting surface and installation configuration. The manufacturer's installation drawing identifies 0.30-inch knockout holes and provides the mounting-hole layout and dimensional information.

Mounting can be coordinated with a concrete wall, masonry surface, steel structure, access-control pedestal, terminal or other suitable structural support. The appropriate anchors and fasteners should be selected for the actual substrate and site conditions.

For new installations, trenching and conduit pathways for power, communications and access-control wiring should be coordinated with the location of the reader cover before concrete or other site work is completed. The trenching and electrical infrastructure are part of the overall access-control installation rather than the hood itself.

Where the hood is incorporated into a freestanding pedestal or terminal, the baseplate, anchors and concrete foundation are determined by the supporting structure. This allows the cover to be incorporated into new pedestal installations as well as existing access-control equipment.

Mounting and Custom Options

The standard 8 × 10 hood is supplied in black wrinkle powder coat. Custom options include alternate powder-coat colors and modified height, width or depth for equipment requiring a different protective enclosure. Custom configurations may involve additional cost and lead time.

The installation drawing provides the specific mounting-hole and knockout arrangement for this configuration. Field installation should follow the applicable dimensional drawing rather than relying solely on the nominal 8 × 10 product designation.
