Optical Speed Gate - Clear Flap Panels
Product Description
The Optical Speed Gate with Glass Flap Barriers is a slim, transparent pedestrian access-control system designed for facilities where security, efficient pedestrian flow and architectural appearance are equally important. Its compact footprint makes it well suited for corporate offices, government facilities, financial institutions, retail environments, telecommunications facilities, educational buildings and other controlled interior entrances.
Motorized glass flap barriers open in the direction of authorized passage and provide electronically controlled access in one or both directions. The system can operate in Normally Closed mode, where the barriers remain closed until an authorized access signal is received, or Normally Open mode, where the walkway remains open until an unauthorized entry or tailgating attempt is detected.
Security and Detection
Integrated optical sensing monitors pedestrian movement through the lane. The system is designed to detect tailgating, piggybacking, intrusion, wrong-way passage and lane timeout conditions. When an unauthorized passage is detected, the integrated alarm system can alert personnel to the event.
LED pictogram indicators provide visual direction and status information. Green arrows indicate authorized passage, while red indicators identify a closed or unauthorized lane. Flashing indicators can identify emergency, alarm or technical conditions.
Glass Barrier Heights
The system is available with several glass barrier heights:
- 34.6 inches — approximately 880 mm
- 47.2 inches — approximately 1,200 mm
- 59.1 inches — approximately 1,500 mm
- 70.9 inches — approximately 1,800 mm
These barrier heights can be specified with the available cabinet lengths.
This makes the system particularly flexible when an architect needs to balance visual openness, pedestrian separation and security requirements.

Standard and Wide Passage Options
Two basic passage widths are available:
Standard Passage: 23.6 inches / 600 mm
Wide Passage: 35.4 inches / 900 mm
The 900 mm wide configuration provides a wider passage for wheelchair access and easier movement through the lane.
A combination configuration is also available, allowing a center cabinet to create a narrow passage on one side and a wide passage on the other.
Cabinet Length Options
The cabinet configuration is available in three basic lengths:
- 47.2 inches / 1,200 mm
- 55.1 inches / 1,400 mm
- 73.6 inches / 1,870 mm
The cabinet width is approximately 4.7 inches / 120 mm before the additional clearance associated with the rotor column.
Multiple cabinets can be combined to create additional lanes. A complete lane uses left- and right-side cabinets, while center and combination cabinets can be used to create multi-lane installations.
Construction and Architectural Finishes
The chassis, plinth, end-leg posts and rotor column use 304-grade stainless steel, with a 10 mm glass inlay. The moving flap barriers are 10 mm tempered glass. The standard lid finish is black technopolymer, with additional finish and material options available.
Optional lid finishes include a range of architectural colors and applied finishes, allowing the equipment to coordinate with surrounding interior finishes.
Drive and Control System
The moving panels are directly mounted to the output shaft of a DC electric motor and gearbox located within the central column. A rotary encoder monitors panel position while the microprocessor control system manages panel location, speed and movement. Opening and closing speeds and the home and end positions can be adjusted through the controller.
Safety photocells help prevent the panels from closing on an obstruction. If the system detects an abnormal obstruction condition, the control logic stops panel movement.
Safety and Emergency Operation
Safety features include force sensing, accurate presence sensing and infrared emitter/receiver technology. A lower safety sensor kit is available as an option.
The system also provides a voltage-free fire-alarm input for a fail-state signal and incorporates manual push-opening and anti-panic push-opening functions.
Emergency egress functionality is incorporated as standard. The product documentation should be reviewed for the specific emergency and fire-alarm configuration required for the project.
Access Control Integration
The speed gate is designed to integrate with external access-control systems. Available options include card-reader integration and remote-control systems. The electronic platform provides digital interface I/O as well as RS232 and RS485 communications.
This allows the speed gate to function as part of a larger access-control system rather than as a standalone device.
Installation, Drilling, Trenching and Conduit
Installation should be coordinated with the architectural, electrical and access-control drawings before the finished floor is completed.
The installation documentation calls for a flat and level finished floor within ±5 mm. The structural integrity of the installation location is the responsibility of the project/installation team.
For the foundation, the installation information specifies:
Minimum concrete strength: Fck cube 30 N/mm²
Minimum bolting depth: 70 mm
Minimum foundation dimensions:
- 1,300 × 400 × 150 mm for the shortest cabinet configuration
- 1,500 × 400 × 150 mm for the intermediate configuration
- 2,000 × 400 × 150 mm for the longest configuration
The exact foundation length corresponds to the selected cabinet configuration.
Conduit and Electrical Stub-Up
Conduit routing should be planned before the finished floor is installed. The installation documentation specifies conduit running a minimum of 140 mm below the finished floor level, with the conduit rising a minimum of 50 mm from the foundation.
For new construction, Security Entrances should recommend that power and access-control/data conduits be stubbed up at the planned cabinet locations before the concrete or finished flooring is completed.
For retrofit installations, drilling and any required trenching should be coordinated with the existing slab and checked for concealed utilities, reinforcement and other obstructions before work begins.
Baseplate / Floor-Saver Installation
Where a project requires an alternate mounting method, the applicable baseplate or floor-saver solution should be specified and confirmed for the selected configuration rather than assuming a universal mounting arrangement.
This is an important distinction for architects: the foundation, anchoring and conduit arrangement should be established from the actual cabinet length and installation configuration.
Flow Rate
Approximate throughput varies according to the type of access-control reader:
- Insertion reader: approximately 20 passages/minute
- Swipe reader: approximately 30 passages/minute
- Proximity reader: approximately 40 passages/minute
Actual throughput depends on credential type, user behavior and access-control configuration.
