Barrier Gate with Articulated Arm

The Articulated Arm Barrier Gate is a high-speed automatic vehicle barrier designed specifically for parking garages, underground parking facilities, covered entrances and other locations where ceiling height prevents the use of a conventional straight barrier arm.

As the gate opens, the articulated boom folds at a predetermined point, allowing a longer barrier arm to control the vehicle lane without requiring the full arm length as vertical overhead clearance. Articulated configurations are available for openings up to approximately 16 feet, depending on the required arm geometry and available ceiling height.

The system is designed for frequent vehicle access and provides smooth, fast operation with opening times as fast as approximately 1.3 seconds, depending on arm length and configuration.

90° Articulated Arm

The 90° articulated arm bends as the barrier opens, allowing the outer portion of the arm to remain in a folded position rather than requiring the entire boom to extend vertically toward the ceiling.

This configuration is particularly useful for parking garages, covered parking areas and entrances beneath buildings where there is insufficient ceiling height for a standard straight boom.

180° Articulated Arm

The 180° articulated arm folds back as the barrier opens so that the arm does not remain extended across the vehicle roadway.

This is especially useful in low-ceiling environments where tall SUVs, pickup trucks, vans and commercial vehicles need additional overhead clearance while passing through the open lane. Once fully opened, the folding geometry keeps the barrier arm out of the vehicle travel path while minimizing the vertical clearance required by the gate.

The articulated-boom system is specifically intended for low entrances such as multi-story and underground parking garages. The boom geometry is ordered according to the required lane width and available installation height.

Access Control Ready

Access Control Ready: Compatible with any and all access control systems where a low-voltage or dry-contact signal is presented by the control panel to open the barrier gate.

The access-control system sends a dry-contact or low-voltage relay signal to the barrier gate controller, instructing the arm to open. This allows the barrier to work with virtually any access-control method that can provide the required relay output, including card readers, credential systems, telephone entry systems, intercoms, vehicle identification systems, parking systems and push-button controls.

Vehicle loops and safety sensors can also be incorporated into the system for vehicle detection, safe closing and traffic sequencing.

Installation & Required Measurements

Articulated barrier gates require additional measurements before the arm can be properly configured. The lane width and finished ceiling height must be provided before ordering.

For the articulated arm, the required L-shaped boom dimensions are determined from the clear opening width and available ceiling height. These measurements establish where the arm must articulate and the lengths of the horizontal and folding sections.

For a proper layout, provide:

• Clear vehicle lane width
• Finished floor to lowest ceiling/obstruction height
• Barrier cabinet location
• Available clearance above the cabinet
• Available clearance around the folding arm
• Direction of arm operation
• Any overhead obstructions (including beams, pipes, sprinklers, signs, lighting or HVAC equipment)

The barrier cabinet is mounted to a properly designed concrete foundation. Power, access-control wiring, vehicle-loop conduit and safety-device wiring should be coordinated before installation.
